Their Playbook

Know What They Know

Every handbook, training manual, and policy guide the FOC staff, referees, mediators, and judges use to make decisions about your family. All public record.

The best way to play the game is to know the rules they play by.

These are the official manuals, handbooks, and training materials from the Michigan State Court Administrative Office (SCAO), the Michigan Judicial Institute (MJI), and the Friend of the Court Bureau. Every document below is public record, sourced directly from courts.michigan.gov and legislature.mi.gov.

Friend of the Court Handbook

The official handbook given to the public by the FOC Bureau. Covers FOC duties, divorce and paternity case administration, custody and support, mediation, grievance procedures, and enforcement. This is how they describe what they do.

Child Support Formula Manual

This is the exact formula FOC staff and referees use to calculate child support. Every number they assign comes from this manual. Knowing the formula means you can check their math and challenge errors.

Parenting Time Guideline

The guidelines FOC staff and judges use to determine parenting time schedules. This is where they get the 'standard' schedule they assign. Knowing this lets you push for more.

Custody & Investigation Manuals

These are the manuals FOC investigators follow when they evaluate your custody case. They tell the investigator exactly what to look for, how to score the 12 best interest factors, and how to write the recommendation that often decides your case. Read these before your evaluation.

Mediation Handbooks & Standards

The rules and procedures mediators follow. Mediation is where many custody and parenting time disputes are decided before they ever see a judge. Know the mediator's rulebook.

FOC Policy & Procedure Manual

The internal policy manual that governs how every FOC office in Michigan operates. When they say 'that's our policy,' this is where it comes from. Hold them to their own rules.

Judge Benchbooks & Checklists

These are the checklists and reference materials judges use on the bench when making decisions about your family. The judges literally follow these step-by-step. You should know every step.

Grievance & Complaint Forms

The official forms and processes for filing grievances and complaints. The system makes it hard to find these. We make it easy.

The Law Itself

The actual statutes that govern the Friend of the Court. When they tell you 'that's the law,' you can pull up the same law and read it for yourself.

Knowledge Is Your Best Weapon

Every document on this page is public record. The system depends on you not knowing the rules. When you walk into court having read the same manuals the FOC staff and judges use, you change the game. Print them. Study them. Bring them with you.
